Tone sorcerer Eric Johnson is notoriously fussy about his guitar sounds—as the story goes, to the point of being able to identify which brand of battery is in a fuzz pedal. In a new interview with Classic Rock Revisited he explains the origin of that legend:
(A) few years ago, I tried one of those super, super high-intensity batteries and my fuzz was sharp and edgy sounding. I said, I know my fuzz. I opened it up and it had one of those batteries and I replaced it with a Duracell and it sounded great. That’s it. That’s the complete story. It was a one-and-a-half-minute story turned into a big, huge story.
And an urban legend was born.
