With the exception of Lulu, their 2011 collaboration with Lou Reed, Metallica haven’t issued a studio album since 2008’s Death Magnetic. But that doesn’t mean James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett haven’t been compiling riffs. Lots of them. As Hammett tells Rolling Stone:
James has 800 pieces of music. I have 400 pieces of music. Once we figure out what pieces of music are actually gonna work for us, then we’re going to start turning those pieces of music into songs and seeing where that leads us.
Nevertheless, the band has specified no solid time frame for releasing new music.
