Soundgarden are about to embark on a tour revolving around the Big Day Out, Australia’s mobile music festival. For nearly a year the band has been working on new material amidst other commitments. Guitarist Kim Thayil described to Mixdown the process of crafting new songs while reviving the old:

(I)t’s very nat­ural for us to kind of impro­vise and jam and come up with ideas. So while we’re work­ing on “Spoon­man” or “Limo Wreck” or “4th of July,” we’d throw up some other riff and some­one else will respond.
