Alex Chilton died just days before Big Star were set to perform at the 2010 South by Southwest festival in Austin. What resulted instead was a tribute featuring the late model group’s remaining members (Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer of The Posies and original member Jody Stephens) and other notables such as Evan Dando and Mike Mills.

Much of this scenario is featured in Nothing Can Hurt Me, the Big Star Story, a forthcoming documentary on the cult band. With the film being completed in the wake of Chilton’s passing, his specter looms large. Here is how Stringfellow describes Chilton’s take on the restored band:

He sees Big Star as his embarrassing teenage poetry. He has to come up with a reason to sort of emote these songs into living things, ‘cause they’re not really where he’s at.
